Learning Japanese - The use of "DESU"

Hey guys, do you still remember on our previous lesson we have learnt the meaning of 'desu'..?? Click HERE if you don't remember,, :-)

Now, we're going to learn about how and when to use the word 'desu'..



DESU (Pronounced as 'des')

Addtional Note:
1. This - Kore
2. That - Sore
3. That one over there - Are
4. Which - Dore

This is a book.
Kore wa hon desu.

Is that a book?
Sore wa hon desu ka.

Yes. it is.
Hai, so desu.

No, it isn't.
Iie, so dewa arimasen.

This isn't a book.
Kore wa hon dewa arimasen.

Isn't this a book.
Kore wa hon dewa arimasen ka.

Is that also a book?
Are mo hon desu ka.

What is this?
Kore wa nan desu ka.

That is a notebook.
Sore wa Noto desu.

Is this a book or a notebook?
Kore wa hon desu ka, noto desu ka.

That is a book.
Sore wa hon desu.

This is my book.
Kore wa watashi no hon desu.

Is that your notebook?
Sore wa anata no noto desu ka.

Whose notebook is this?
Kore wa dare no noto desu ka.

That is Mr. Tanaka's note book.
Sore wa Tanaka san no noto desu.

Which is mine? / Which is my notebook?
Dore ga watashi no desu ka. / Dore ga watashi no noto desu ka.

This is a book, and that is a dictionary.
Kore wa hon de sore wa jisho desu.

Today is Monday, and tomorrow is Tuesday.
Kyo wa getsuyobi de ashita wa kayobi desu.

Today is working day, and tomorrow is holiday.
Kyo wa shigoto de ashita wa yasumi desu.
